Seasonal Depression Is Real (And You’re Not Alone)

I had a conversation with a client recently about seasonal depression — and honestly, it’s something I hear all the time this time of year.

The weather gets cold. The holidays happen. We’re busy, social, running on adrenaline… and then suddenly it’s over and we’re left thinking, now what?

That’s usually when the slump hits.

When I say “seasonal depression,” I’m talking about that common winter funk so many of us feel — low energy, low motivation, feeling off or just blah. This isn’t meant to replace real mental health support, and if you’re struggling beyond that, talking to a professional is always important.

But if you’re feeling frumpy, tired, unmotivated, or just kind of yuck — you’re not alone.

Seasonal depression is real.

And sometimes? It’s okay to sit in it for a minute. To rest. To slow down. To mellow out after the chaos of the holidays.

But eventually, we do have to pull ourselves out of it — especially when the weather starts teasing us with sunshine again. Because lately, it’s been weirdly nice out. You can feel it… that itch for spring. For summer. For lake days, sunshine, and margaritas.

So let’s talk about realistic ways to get out of the slump — nothing extreme, nothing unrealistic.


1. Move Your Feet

I’m not telling you to run a 5K (unless that’s your thing — then go you).

I’m talking about walking.

Put in your headphones.
Music. A podcast. An audiobook.
Go for 15 minutes. Maybe 30.

That’s it.

The more consistent you are, the better you’ll feel. It’s not about intensity — it’s about movement. Just getting your body moving again can make a bigger difference than you think.


2. Add a Little Glow

This one might sound simple, but it works.

When you’re pale, dry, and stuck in winter mode, it’s easy to feel dull. Adding a little color back into your skin can instantly boost confidence and make you feel more put together.

Whether that’s:

  • A spray tan

  • Self tanner

  • Or even just maintaining a subtle glow

You don’t need to go dark — just a little warmth can change how you feel in your own skin.


3. Do Something for Yourself

You don’t need a full makeover to feel better.

Sometimes it’s:

  • A shampoo and style

  • A good scalp scrub to get rid of winter buildup

  • A trim or a refresh

  • A fresh nail color (bonus points if it’s bright)

  • A fun outfit that makes you feel like you again

Small things can shift your mindset fast.


4. Eat Better (Without Being Extreme)

This is something I’ve been learning personally.

I recently started counting my macros, and honestly — game changer. I realized I wasn’t eating enough, especially protein. Now that I have my meals loosely planned and understand what my body needs, I feel a zillion times better.

I’m not saying give up snacks. Just don’t be a reckless snacker. Fueling your body matters more than we think.


5. Give Yourself Grace

This season is weird. The weather is weird. Life is busy.

If you’re feeling off, you’re not failing.

Seasonal slumps happen. What matters is recognizing it and taking small steps to feel better — one walk, one appointment, one good meal at a time.
