The Truth About Hair Extensions

The Truth About Hair Extensions

Let’s talk about hair extensions.

Because honestly, I think a lot of people hear the words “hair extensions” and immediately picture super long Instagram hair that magically appeared overnight.

And while extensions absolutely can give you length, there’s actually a lot more to them than that.

Extensions can add fullness, density, volume, length, color, confidence, and sometimes honestly just make styling your hair easier.

But before you decide extensions aren’t for you, there are a few things I think everyone should understand.

First of all, not all hair extensions are created equal.

There are several different methods available.

Tape-ins, hand-tied wefts, machine wefts, keratin bonds, I-tips, clip-ins, halos, and more.

Every method has pros and cons.

When installed properly and maintained correctly, extensions should not damage your natural hair.

Personally, I prefer the beaded weft method.

Why?

Because it’s comfortable, versatile, reusable, doesn’t require glue, doesn’t require heat, and can be customized for fullness, length, or both.

It also allows me to remove the extensions and move them back up as your natural hair grows.

For most of my clients, that’s a huge win.

The brand I carry is Babe Hair Extensions.

And one thing many people don’t realize is that extension hair goes through a completely different process than the hair growing out of your head.

Your natural hair is alive.

Extension hair isn’t.

Once hair is collected and processed, it no longer has the ability to repair itself, moisturize itself, or bounce back from damage the way your natural hair can.

That’s why extension quality matters.

And that’s also why home care matters so much.

Speaking of color…

Let’s talk about something that surprises people.

Most extension colors are not naturally occurring colors.

The hair often goes through multiple processing steps to achieve certain shades.

Especially blondes.

Those beautiful bright blondes, icy blondes, ash blondes, and platinum colors usually require significant processing before they ever arrive in the package.

Which means that hair has already been through a lot before it even gets installed.

That’s also why extension hair can sometimes feel drier than your natural hair.

It needs moisture.

A lot of moisture.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is:

“If I buy extensions, my hair will automatically look perfect.”

I wish it worked that way 😅

But just like natural hair, extensions still require maintenance.

You still have to brush them.

You still have to wash them.

You still have to style them.

You still have to protect them.

Extensions are an investment, and taking care of them is part of protecting that investment.

One of the most important things you can do is brush them.

And brush them often.

Not aggressively.

Not yanking through them.

But gently supporting the hair and brushing from the ends upward.

Skipping this step is one of the quickest ways to create tangles and matting.

Sleeping with wet extensions is another big no.

Your natural hair doesn’t love it either, but extensions especially do not appreciate it.

Always make sure your hair is completely dry before bed.

A loose braid or low ponytail while sleeping can also help prevent unnecessary tangling.

Let’s talk about products.

Hydration is your best friend.

Extension hair loves moisture.

I always recommend using professional products and adding an oil to your routine.

Moroccanoil Treatment is one of my favorites because it’s lightweight, adds shine, helps control frizz, and gives those ends the moisture they desperately want.

The Moroccanoil Hydrating Mask is another great option for giving extension hair some extra love.

And since we’re heading into summer, let’s talk about swimming.

Chlorine, lake water, sunscreen, and salt water are not extension hair’s best friends.

That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy summer.

It just means you need to be smart about it.

Wet your hair with clean water before swimming.

Use a leave-in conditioner if possible.

Braid your hair.

Keep it from tangling.

And always rinse and wash your hair afterward.

The longer chlorine and sunscreen sit on extension hair, the more likely you are to experience dryness, discoloration, and damage.

Another thing people don’t realize is that extensions are not a one-time appointment.

Let’s talk about cost for a minute because I think that’s one of the biggest questions people have.

Hair extensions are an investment.

For most clients, the first appointment is typically somewhere between $500 and $1,500, depending on the amount of hair needed, the length selected, and your overall goals.

Some people only need a little fullness. Others want major length and a complete transformation.

The hair itself is usually the biggest part of that investment.

The good news is that you’re not buying brand new hair every appointment.

With proper care, quality extension hair can often last 6 months to a year, and sometimes even longer depending on how well it’s maintained.

That’s why taking care of your extensions at home matters so much.

The better you care for them, the longer they last and the more value you get from your investment.

They’re a commitment.

Most extension clients return every 6-8 weeks for maintenance appointments.

Your natural hair continues growing, so the extensions need to be moved up and adjusted regularly.

That’s completely normal.

And honestly, proper maintenance is what keeps extensions looking beautiful and protects your natural hair underneath.

One row of extensions is usually perfect for someone wanting fullness.

Two rows are often recommended for length and fullness.

Every client is different, which is why consultations are so important.

What works for your friend may not be what works best for you.

One thing I always tell people is that extensions aren’t just about having “long hair.”

Some of my favorite extension transformations aren’t even the longest ones.

Sometimes it’s helping someone with fine hair finally feel like they have a ponytail.

Sometimes it’s adding fullness around the sides.

Sometimes it’s giving someone back a little confidence after hair loss, stress, hormones, or simply changes that come with age.

Extensions can absolutely be life-changing for the right person.

At the end of the day, I love extensions.

I love the confidence they give people.

I love the versatility.

I love seeing someone look in the mirror and feel like themselves again.

But I also believe in being honest about what they require.

They’re an investment.

They require maintenance.

They require good products.

And they require a little commitment.

But for the right person?

They’re absolutely worth it.

Because if it’s something we talk about in the chair…

it probably needed to be said here too.
