Why My Prices Are Changing (And Why My Hours Are Too)

Why My Prices Are Changing (And Why My Hours Are Too)

Okay… let’s talk about something that honestly makes a lot of business owners uncomfortable to talk about 😅

Price increases.

Changing hours.

Setting boundaries.

But after being open for over a decade now, I’ve learned something important:

If you want to keep loving what you do… you have to protect your peace a little bit too.

And honestly? I really do love what I do.

I love doing hair. I love lashes. I love skincare. I love the boutique. I love the conversations. I love watching people walk out feeling better about themselves.

This industry is supposed to feel creative and fun.

And I don’t want to lose that spark.

But I also work a lot.

Like… a LOT.

Most weeks I’m working around 50 hours behind the chair alone, and that doesn’t include the days I come in early, stay late, answer messages at night, do bookkeeping, order inventory, clean, post on social media, work on the website, unpack boutique shipments, or everything else that comes with running a business.

Because at the end of the day… it’s just me.

I’m the one running the salon. I’m the one running the boutique. I’m the one ordering products, planning things, scheduling things, cleaning things, posting things, unpacking things, fixing things, and trying to keep everything moving all at once.

And honestly… lately I’ve realized I’m getting a little burnt out.

Not because I don’t love my business.

But because I care about it a lot.

And when you spend all day doing salon appointments back-to-back, sometimes by the end of the day your brain is just done.

And I’ve honestly felt like I’ve been slacking on the boutique side of things because of it.

I want to put more effort into it again. I want to enjoy creating displays, bringing in new inventory, planning events, working on the website, and doing the fun creative side of the boutique instead of constantly feeling like I’m trying to catch up.

And before somebody says,
“Just hire someone to help.”

Trust me… I’ve thought about it 😅

But the reality is, hiring someone does not magically make everything disappear overnight.

Training someone takes time. Managing people takes time. Teaching someone how I want things done takes time too.

And because the salon and boutique are both such personal businesses to me, it’s hard to just hand everything over and walk away from it.

Especially when I’m still the one responsible for making sure everything runs smoothly at the end of the day.

Now that doesn’t mean I’ll never add help in some areas eventually.

But right now, what I really need is a little more balance and a little more time to focus on the parts of the business I’ve been neglecting while trying to do everything all at once.

Because honestly… I don’t want to get to the point where I’m so burnt out that I stop enjoying something I worked this hard to build.

So starting in June, I will not be working Saturdays.

And honestly? I’m excited about it 😅

Summer in Kansas is short.

Pools are open. Race season is happening. Families are busy. Life moves fast this time of year.

And after spending over a decade working most Saturdays, I want a little time to actually enjoy summer too.

Once school starts back up, I’ll reassess my schedule again.

Honestly, I’ll probably end up taking Mondays off and going back to working Saturday because the reality of this industry is that I usually work when everybody else is off work.

Nights. Weekends. Busy seasons. Holidays.

That’s just part of salon life.

But I also know I can’t keep running nonstop forever and expect myself to still feel creative, motivated, and excited about what I do.

And that brings me to the other change happening.

Starting in July, my prices will be increasing.

And honestly… my prices have stayed the same for years now.

Meanwhile literally everything else in life has gone up 😅

Product costs. Color costs. Shipping. Processing fees. Utilities. Supplies. Education. All of it.

And after over a decade behind the chair, I also have something that matters just as much as product:

Experience.

Experience matters.

Knowing how to formulate color matters. Knowing how to fix things matters. Knowing how to protect the integrity of someone’s hair and lashes matters.

And over the years I’ve invested a lot into education, learning, growing, remodeling, expanding services, and building this business into what it is today.

So while I know nobody gets excited hearing the words “price increase,” I also think it’s important to understand the why behind it.

The goal is not to become unaffordable.

The goal is to continue providing good service, quality products, a comfortable environment, creativity, and results people trust.

And honestly… I’m really proud of what Shear Madness has grown into over the years.

From a small salon space to the building I’m in now, adding the boutique, remodeling, expanding services, and continuing to grow—it’s been a lot of work, but also really rewarding.

And none of it would exist without the people who continue supporting local businesses like mine.

So truly—thank you.

Thank you to the clients who have been with me since the beginning.

Thank you to the people who drive from out of town.

Thank you to the people who shop local, book appointments, share posts, tell friends, and continue supporting what I’ve built here.

It genuinely means more than people probably realize.

At the end of the day, I still want Shear Madness to feel fun, welcoming, creative, comfortable, and somewhere people genuinely enjoy coming to.

And honestly… sometimes making changes is part of making sure that can continue long term.

Because if it’s something we talk about in the chair…

it probably needed to be said here too.
